- This is just a word about scanning. I'm using a
Canon LiDE 90
scanner, which costs about $80 at places like
MicroCenter and
Newegg.com. I'm using the 300 DPI grayscale option, treating
individual pages as photographs (not documents), and using maximum PDF compression.
This has kept the average page size to around 70 KB per page with an acceptable
level of quality. I'm giving this information so that you can try to configure your
scanners similarly, particularly if you decide to buy the same kind of scanner.
In general, some of the things you want to look for when scanning include: (a) not scanning to ridiculous resolutions (e.g., scanning at 1000 DPI, when even most laser writers won't print above 600 dots per inch); (b) scanning as grayscale instead of color (color data takes around 3 times as much space as grayscale; because we're interested in writing / text, we don't need color); (c) make sure there's enough contrast: if the writing is too faint, then it's impossible to distinguish from the white background of your page (up the contrast with your scanner software, or rewrite in pen instead of pencil); (d) use compression (don't send bitmaps, PNG's, or TIFF's), such as jpeg or PDF compression; (e) print out a sample page: if it looks good on your printer, it probably will on mine, too. -- Paul
